Match by income, if each spouse puts in $2,000 (our calculation)
| Combined MAGI | Match rate | Match per spouse | Match per couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | 50% | $1,000 | $2,000 |
| $50,000 | 35% | $700 | $1,400 |
| $63,000 | 14% | $280 | $560 |
| $70,000 | 2% | $40 | $80 |
Calculated with the phase-out formula in Notice 2026-48Notice 2026-48, Q&A C-2: rate = 50% minus 50 × (MAGI − $41,000) ÷ $30,000, with the reduction rounded down. At $70,000 the match is $40 per spouse; a match under $100 can be taken as a refundable credit insteadNotice 2026-48, Q&A D-2.
The IRS’s own example
A couple filing jointly with combined MAGI of $63,000, where one spouse contributes $1,000 and the other $2,000: the rate is 14%, so the matches are $140 and $280Notice 2026-48, Q&A C-2, Ex. 2.

Common questions
Do both spouses get a Saver's Match?
Yes, each spouse is determined separately. Each can qualify for up to $1,000 based on their own contributions to their own plan or IRA, so up to $2,000 per couple (Notice 2026-48 Q&A I-1; IRS).
What income is used for married couples?
For married filing jointly, MAGI is the combined MAGI of both spouses (Notice 2026-48 Q&A I-1, B-3). The match phases out from $41,000 and is zero at $71,000 for 2027 (IRS).
What if only one spouse contributes?
Only the spouse who makes qualified contributions to their own plan or IRA gets a match; it's based on each spouse's own contributions (Notice 2026-48 Q&A I-1).
What about married filing separately?
Married filing separately uses the single thresholds: full match up to $20,500 and none at $35,500 (IRS).
